The town of Turrialba grew up beside the Pacuare river over the past hundred years. It was a half way point on the railroad route from San Jose to Limon on the Caribbean coast and as such was relatively important. When the railroad was closed down Turrialba lost its importance and became a small unimportant market town catering to the needs of the local farmers and their workers. It is only since 2005 that Turrialba has again emerged as a vibrant hub of tourism and industry. It is also becoming a popular area for North American and European ex-patriots to settle and build their retirement homes. This is the ideal place for those who do not enjoy the crime and pollution of the big city or the tourist trap-beaches. The quiet peaceful surroundings of the mountains would be my choice. |
